5 reasons why you should study abroad

Most of these blog posts have had the aim of encouraging you to study in Helsinki and giving you more information on life there. However I realise Finland might not be for everyone and you may have somewhere else in mind. I think the most important thing is that you go somewhere, anywhere! So here’s a quick five reasons why everyone should study abroad.

1.  The perfect time for travel

This is the perfect time to get out and travel. You have no university or work commitments (beyond the study you will do there) and you get a grant to help towards the expenses. So take the bull by the horns and take an opportunity you might never have again.

2. You’ll learn more than you would at home

At least for subjects that involve opinion and debate, you’ll get more out of your studies abroad than you would at home. You have the opportunity to hear the views of people from vastly different countries, cultures, religions and backgrounds – its a unique opportunity!

3. The opportunity to live in another country

There’s something you get from living in a country that you don’t get by visiting. Spending 9 months in a country allows you to fully explore what it has to offer and to fully understand and immerse yourself in its culture.

4. Make friends from around the world

At no other time in your life will you have the opportunity to simultaneously befriend people from so many different countries. This also makes your future holidays and travels a lot cheaper and easier – you have a couch to sleep on all over the world!

5. A great line on your CV

What better way to make yourself stand out to employers than to have lived and studied abroad for a year!

To summarise : the opportunity to study abroad is not one to miss! You’ll have an amazing experience that will continue to benefit you in the future.
